Dialectical Behaviour Therapy

Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) is a type of psychotherapy that focuses on teaching individuals skills to manage their emotions and improve their relationships with others. DBT was initially developed to treat borderline personality disorder but has been found to be effective for treating a variety of mental health conditions, including depression, anxiety, and substance use disorders.

At Berlin Rehabilitation and Medical Center, our trained therapists use DBT to help individuals develop skills in four key areas: mindfulness, distress tolerance, emotion regulation, and interpersonal effectiveness.

Mindfulness involves being fully present in the moment and observing one’s thoughts and emotions without judgment. Through mindfulness training, individuals learn to become more aware of their emotional reactions and develop greater control over their responses.

Distress tolerance skills help individuals cope with intense emotions and stressors. These skills include techniques such as deep breathing, progressive muscle relaxation, and self-soothing activities like taking a warm bath or listening to calming music.

Emotion regulation skills teach individuals how to identify and manage their emotions. This includes learning to identify triggers for negative emotions, developing healthy coping strategies, and enhancing positive emotions.

Interpersonal effectiveness skills help individuals build and maintain healthy relationships with others. This includes effective communication, setting boundaries, and learning to negotiate effectively.

DBT has been shown to be effective in reducing symptoms of various mental health conditions, including suicidal behavior, self-harm, and substance use. It is typically provided in a group setting, but can also be provided in individual therapy.

If you or a loved one are struggling with emotional regulation, relationship difficulties, or other mental health concerns, consider seeking the services of a DBT therapist at Berlin Rehabilitation and Medical Center. Our therapists are trained in evidence-based treatments and can work with you to create an individualized treatment plan to meet your unique needs and goals.
